what is ambergris and where does it come from?

hmm what is that smell?!!!

Ambergris is a rare, waxy substance that originates in the digestive system of sperm whales. It's often found floating in the ocean or washed up on shorelines.

Sperm whales produce ambergris as a defense mechanism. When these whales eat large amounts of squid, their beaks (which can't be digested) irritate the whale's intestines. Ambergris forms around these beaks to ease their passage through the whale’s digestive system.

Once expelled, the substance may float in the ocean for years, during which time it hardens and develops a distinct, pleasant odor, valued in the perfume industry.

Ambergris has an ability to fix scent, allowing perfumes to last longer. While synthetic alternatives are now widely used, ambergris remains valuable in niche markets.
